The Medico-Chirurgical Society of Aberdeen was started in 1789 by Sir James McGregor, later Wellington's chief medical officer. We have a rich collection of papers (including McGregor's own records, Alexander Gordon's "Treatise on the Epidemic Puerperal Fever of Aberdeen" – the first description of the contagious nature of puerperal fever, more than 50 years before Semmelweiss, a copy of the first medical book written in Scots, etc.), portraits (including Sir Alexander Ogston, Sir Ashley MacIntosh, etc.), artefacts (including a death mask of Napoleon, a lock-keeper's resuscitation kit, surgical instruments, Ogston's antiseptic spray, etc.), students notes from 1776 and complete minutes from 1789. More detail can be found in the Heritage Section of the Society's website. Currently, there is no access to the collection as the Society's premises are closed due to RAAC concrete issues.
